Freshman English
"Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, and riches take wings. Only one thing endures and that is character." (Horace Greeley)
AGENDAS & Assignments
Students who are missing any journal items (entries/exits, notes, vocabulary, etc.) can access weekly PowerPoints here. If there is an assignment mentioned in the PowerPoint, click on the "Assignments" link to find the particular assignment. If for whatever reason, you are not able to access any of the links, feel free to email me by clicking here or using the address on the "Home" page.
Coming of Age!!
Students are beginning the year focusing on the theme of "Coming of Age". Our reading and writing will focus around this concept of what it means to "come of age" and how authors use this "theme" to develop their own voice through diction, imagery and syntax. PLEASE visit our blog in the "More" section and join our blog on this topic.
The Short Story
Like many Freshman English classes, we are studying short stories this year. Students will learn to analyze stories for literary elements, plot development, characterization, and other elements deemed necessary. They will also practice developing their writing skills by assessing author's craft and applying it to their own writing.
The Poe Jeopardy game can be accessed here if you would like to challenge your parents/guardians, siblings, or friends to a friendly little game.
To Kill A Mockingbird
Our first major novel for second semester will be To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Students will need to make sure they do their reading regularly so they can participate in classroom discussions. Students who are struggling can access Sparknotes here which will provide them with a quick summary of each chapter. Please note that the Sparknotes will not be enough to assist students will all of the information covered in class.
